Solar panels on NASA's new space shuttle can power your laptop for hours – it just needs to be connected to the power grid first.

The sun-battery pack is not on display just yet at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. But when it goes on display in August, it will be tucked away in a sealed box.

But if enough people pay what would be a cool $50,000 for the solar panel, NASA may have its answer to the long-running problem of battery replacement in space.

If you're like most of us, if you're on a stationary bike, the sun battery will probably need replacing at some point.

In the space shuttle program, the space agency's batteries have to be replaced every 11 days.

NASA's plan to replace those batteries in space will be a bit different than what's used on the ground – one thing you likely have in common: Your laptop's battery must be on.

The sun-charged batteries must be charged on board a space shuttle, but on a space station. And unlike on the ground, the shuttle's power lines don't need to be shut down while in orbit.

In fact, space shuttle batteries are capable of staying charged to power up in space for a full 24-hour period, according to the space agency.

"It would mean that our crewmembers would get up and go to work – that's a critical, critical part of the mission – they wouldn't have to plug in a laptop while they were doing it," NASA spokesperson Katie White said on Tuesday. "And if you are doing any kind of sustained or demanding work, and you have a battery backup there, it makes it incredibly challenging to shut down for whatever reason, including a power outage."

The solar panel will cost NASA $50,000 to $100,000, she added.

White told ABC News that the space shuttle battery problems are still being looked at "over the coming months."

But for now, the sun-charged battery pack will be tucked away in a sealed box.

For many months to come, NASA may not have the luxury of letting customers replace the battery. But the solar panel's presence will certainly be watched closely by NASA's suppliers and manufacturers.
